Year 5 and 6 have been learning about the Solar System. This has involved studying various planets and phenomena.
They have explored how scientists have used experiments and data to back up their theories about how our solar system looks and moves. This has included Eratosthenes who helped prove the Earth was round by studying shadows and Galileo who built specialised telescopes to prove that the Earth moved around the Sun and not the other way around.
Year 5 and 6 have also explored the scale of the universe. In the photo below and video (click here), students have stepped outside to create a distance model of the planets from the sun. In this model, every step is equal to nearly 50 million kilometers. Also, for a model this length to work, the diameter of the Sun could only be 1cm.
